The Friends of 54 Camberwell Green supported the work of the home. Situated within a residential area of Camberwell, London. Camberwell Green Care Home which closed in January 2016 was a purpose built 55 bedded care home offering Dementia, Nursing, Respite and End of Life care.
The Friends aimed to improve the quality of life of the residents of the care home by working with staff, residents and relatives.
The Friends of 54 Camberwell Green developed services on the site. We found that it was particularly valued by residents who through deteriorating health did not have the confidence to come out of their rooms. Alongside they supported the care homes’ activities’ coordinators by providing extra pairs of hands during organised activity sessions and outings.
Business volunteering day - Angel Trains staff volunteer to make a difference.

It wasn’t a typical working day for a team from Angel Trains, one of Britain’s leading train leasing companies, but their commitment to annual team volunteering days helped transform some of the rooms at 54 Camberwell Green care home

Taking up the challenge of giving something back and volunteering time, staff set out to help a local venue a purpose built 55 bedded care home offering Dementia, Nursing, Respite and End of Life care.
The project took ten staff away from the comfort of their office to volunteer at 54 Camberwell Green Care Home. The task was to paint one of the lounge areas and one bedroom.
Swapping a pen for a paintbrush, the team was tasked with decorating the huge communal lounge that’s used as a place of relaxation and entertainment for the residents.
“I’ve enjoyed the day so much and got to know some people in the office, I rarely get to spend quality time with at work” was how Kevin Tribley, Chief Operating Officer, described the day. I’m proud as a company, we commit to days like this”
Usha Prasanna, Camberwell Green Care Home Manager was equally impressed “Ten extra pair of hands has been amazing. Our residents deserve nice surroundings and a good quality of life. Angel Trains have been fantastic in allowing staff time to volunteer and help us transform the heart of the centre. Myself, staff and residents are truly touched”

Many thanks for your on-going interest in being involved with the residents of this home. In the last few days, we have been advised that the leadership by HC-One’s management that they have made the difficult decision to close the home.
As those of you who have visited the home will be aware, the layout and environment of the building are not conducive to a modern care service due to the four floor layout and limited social and outdoor space. Timescales for the closure are unclear, but it is very unlikely to happen before Christmas as HC-One will continue to support the home so that residents can find a new care home of their choice.
Our early conversations make it clear that volunteers are needed now more than ever. The home will be unsettled, and residents are likely to be upset by this major change in their lives. In addition, residents will be visiting other care homes in the local area so they can make an informed choice of new home, and they will require support to do this – residents really do need you to carry on your commitment to them.
We will shortly be arranging a meeting on site for all current volunteers (including those going through the system). However, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me, David Wood, on david.wood@attend.org.uk
Yours sincerely
