The Friends of Birchwood Grange Care Home support the work of the home situated in Harrow. Birchwood Grange is a friendly care home that offers residential care, residential dementia care and respite care.
The Friends aim to improve the quality of life of the residents of the care home by working with staff, residents and relatives. The Friends of Birchwood Grange are looking to develop services on the site. We have found that this is particularly valued by some residents who through deteriorating health do not have the confidence to come out of their rooms. Alongside this we support the care homes’ activities’ coordinators by providing extra pairs of hands during organised activity sessions and outings.
Autumn Garden Challenge
On Wednesday 29th October 2025, the Friends of Birchwood Grange came to the home for the winter tidy up of the garden
The Friends planted more than £200 worth of plants to give some seasonal colour. We will be back again in spring
Garden Challenge Day with students from the St Dominic’s Sixth Form College

On Wednesday 2nd July 2025, Friends of Birchwood Grange garden challenge team were joined by students from the St Dominic’s Sixth Form College.
Thanks to the efforts of Attend volunteers and the Sixth Form students, a lot was accomplished: aromatic herbs were planted and labelled so residents could easily recognise them, the pavement was power-washed, a flower bed was created, and the entire fence was freshly repainted, leaving the garden looking lovely by the end of the day. No effort was spared, with all volunteers not being afraid to have their hands dirty and one student even helping all morning to create the hole for the flowerbed.

Volunteer Catch Up Meetings
Since Covid, the routines have changed the way people volunteer in care homes
Since Covid, the way people volunteer in care homes has changed significantly. The routines that once were routine have evolved and are now adapting new protocols. This has created a great shift in how we can support residents.
With these changes, the faces around care homes have changed to. Not only the care home staff, but also the volunteers. Since there has been so much change over a relatively short time, it is understandable that volunteers might feel disconnected. But at Attend, we recognise that volunteering should feel meaningful, and collaborative.
While there has always been the opportunity for one-to-one contact with Attend by contacting Sona at sona.sladkova@attend.org.uk we are now looking at another way for our volunteers to gain more support.
On the first Tuesday of every month, we will be holding open zoom sessions for any volunteer to catch up. These will be at 2pm. If you would like to join the call, email sona.sladkova@attend.org.uk to be added to the zoom invite.
